Current Legal Status of Psychedelics in Fontana
As the first state to legalize the medicinal use of cannabis in 1996, California continues to play a pivotal role in the psychedelic realm by implementing new laws.
Following Denver, the cities of Oakland and Santa Cruz made headlines by decriminalizing psilocybin in 2019 and 2020, respectively. What sets these cities apart from Denver’s significant move is that they also decriminalized the use of other psychoactive plants.
When we say ‘decriminalized,’ it’s important to note that it doesn’t mean legalized. Decriminalization simply means that the use of psilocybin and other natural psychedelic plants is of the lowest priority for law enforcement in these cities.
In the following years, Arcata followed suit by decriminalizing the use and cultivation of psilocybin and other entheogenic plants. Most recently, the city of Berkeley decriminalized all naturally occurring psychedelics except peyote.
While natural psychedelics have been decriminalized in these specific cities, State Senator Scott Wiener attempted to achieve statewide decriminalization of these substances by introducing Senate Bill 519 in early 2021.
Though not passed, SB 519 aimed to decriminalize the possession and use of small quantities of certain psychedelic substances, including psilocybin, psilocin, DMT, ibogaine, mescaline, LSD, and MDMA for individuals aged 21 and older.
SB 519 also aimed to eliminate criminal penalties for the possession of these substances and seal prior drug convictions.
However, SB 519 failed to gather the support needed, leading Wiener to withdraw the bill. Nonetheless, there is still hope. Senate Bill 58 was introduced, which implements SB 519 with revisions aimed at securing the necessary support.
In SB 58, the changes included the removal of LSD and MDMA from the list of psychedelic substances that would have been decriminalized. Additionally, SB 58 eliminated provisions related to psychedelic education and research in order to focus solely on decriminalization.
Recently, the California legislature passed SB 58, and it now awaits the governor’s final review. If signed into law, SB 58 will go into effect on January 1, 2025, making California the third state to decriminalize naturally occurring psychedelics.
The future of psychedelics in California holds great promise, as accessibility to these substances is likely to expand soon. However, it’s important that you are aware of some factors that may exclude you from psychedelic therapy.
Are Psychedelics Right for You?
With an estimated 13% of adult Americans being prescribed antidepressants, it’s important that you are well-informed about how these medications interact with psychedelic substances.
Since both psychedelics and antidepressants affect the serotonin system, the risk of developing serotonin syndrome, which can sometimes be fatal, is significantly increased due to the excess amount of serotonin released in your body.
Additionally, antidepressants may dampen the effects of the psychedelic substance, which can reduce the intensity of the experience, delay the onset of effects, and affect the duration of the overall experience.
Other medications that shouldn’t be combined with psychedelics include stimulants like Adderall, mood stabilizers like Lithium, and benzodiazepines due to the unpredictable reactions they might provoke.
When it comes to health conditions, it’s advised not to undergo a psychedelic experience if you have schizophrenia, psychosis, and bipolar disorder or if they run in your family.
The altered state of consciousness that psychedelics induce can amplify existing symptoms of psychosis, such as hallucinations, delusions, and paranoia, making them feel even more overwhelming and distressing.
While those with these disorders are already in vulnerable states, adding psychedelics to the mix may put them at a higher risk of impaired judgment and decision-making, potentially leading to harm for the individual or others.
Psychedelics also shouldn’t be used if you have a history of heart conditions, as a psychedelic experience can increase heart rate and blood pressure, potentially worsening your condition.
Another important factor to keep in mind when considering the use of psychedelics is age. The brain isn’t fully developed until your mid-twenties, and psychedelics can affect brain function by altering neural connections.
While it’s still unclear if psychedelics affect brain development, it’s advisable to exercise caution when using them and consult with your healthcare provider beforehand.
Legal Options for Accessing Psychedelic Therapy in Fontana, 2023
Are you ready to begin your well-deserved healing journey? Look no further. In Fontana, you have two options for having a legal psychedelic experience: ketamine clinics and guided psychedelic journeys with Psychedelic Passage.
1. Ketamine Clinics
The story of ketamine begins with the synthesis of PCP in the early 1950s as a dissociative anesthetic. Despite its effective sedative properties, PCP was eventually discontinued as an anesthetic due to its intense effects such as delirium, hallucinations, and agitation.
With the goal of developing a safer alternative to PCP, ketamine was synthesized in the 1960s. Ketamine was found to have several advantages over PCP, such as a lower potential for adverse effects, a rapid onset of action, and a shorter duration of effects.
Over the years, ketamine has been found to be useful in other medical applications, such as the treatment of severe depression. While ketamine isn’t FDA-approved for this purpose, doctors can use it off-label.
By inducing a dissociative state, ketamine allows you to feel detached from yourself and your surroundings, allowing you to take a step back from your troubles and view them from a third-person perspective.
While ketamine can certainly be a ray of hope for those suffering from treatment-resistant depression who have tried every other treatment on the market with no success, it’s important to note that ketamine isn’t the solution for everyone.
For example, those with a history of psychotic disorders, substance use disorders, or certain cardiovascular conditions should avoid using ketamine due to the increased risk of experiencing negative effects.
If your doctor believes that ketamine therapy is the right option for you, be sure to research the ketamine clinics near you to see what services they offer. In the meantime, make sure to read up on the pros and cons of ketamine therapy.
