Psilocybin & Psychedelic Assisted Therapy in Arizona

Welcome, we’re so glad you’re here. Psychedelic healing can be a powerful but challenging road, and we commend your courage in walking it. In this article, we’ll be going over the legality of psychedelics in Arizona and what your options are for a safe, supportive psychedelic experience in the Grand Canyon State.

If you’ve heard about psychedelic healing in the news, it’s likely you’ve encountered psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. This is when a licensed therapist guides a patient through a multiple month-long protocol with one to three sessions with a psychedelic substance. Unless you’re selected to join a study, however, this form of healing is not going to be available to you for a few years.

The key lies in the word therapy. Therapy involves a mental health professional whose licensure depends on following the rules of their state government. Since psychedelics are illegal in every state (with the exception of Oregon in February 2022), therapists who use them with patients could lose their license.

However, therapeutic simply means “to have a beneficial effect on the body or mind.” A compassionate person with experience in facilitating psychedelic ceremonies could provide a therapeutic psychedelic experience without the same penalties as a therapist.

At Psychedelic Passage, not only are our facilitators experienced and compassionate, they prioritize safety, work with mentors, and are honest about their limitations. We believe that the transformation of consciousness is a fundamental human right— read on to learn about the legality of psychedelics in Arizona and what your options are for a safe, supportive psychedelic experience in the Grand Canyon State.

Benefits of Having a Therapeutic Psychedelic Experience

There are so many benefits to a psychedelic experience. Most prevalent in society today is the capacity to heal treatment-resistant mental disorders. Psilocybin mushrooms are proving to be a potent antidepressant without the terrible side effects of pharmaceutical drugs, and MDMA is on track to become a legal treatment for PTSD by 2023.

But psychedelics are not just medicines. The classical psychedelics like ayahuasca, LSD, and psilocybin “magic” mushrooms all turn off the neural network in your brain most responsible for creating your sense of self.

When this happens, your sense of self expands. You gain the ability to know yourself anew, to completely shift old stories and beliefs. Not all people have a full blown mystical experience, but there is a reason why these substances are so aligned with spiritual realm. With the small self or ego temporarily offline, you gain the ability to connect with something bigger.

There’s also the performance enhancement camp. People may go to an ayahuasca retreat to get clarity on the struggles of their business, or to learn how to be a more effective, heart-centered leader. And through microdosing, or taking small amounts of a psychedelic several times a week, you can enhance focus, creativity, and meaningful relationship building.

The Current Legislation on Psychedelics in Arizona

Compared to states like Oregon or Michigan, the engine of psychedelic reform in Arizona has yet to be kicked into high gear. In 2019, the state hosted its first ever psychedelic conference in Tempe. In the last few years, psychedelic clubs have sprouted in major cities like Phoenix. And of course, there is Sedona, home of an intense spiritual community with plenty of education on psychedelics and their benefits.

But as of the publishing of this article, psychedelics remain illegal across the state, with no significant reformation efforts. However, the legalization of recreational marijuana in November of 2020 presents some momentum in getting politicians to see the benefits of medicinal psychoactive plants.

The psychedelic renaissance is in full swing, so you can expect to see more dedicated efforts for reformation in Arizona soon.

In the meantime, there are plenty of resources for psychedelic integration across the state. While they can’t provide psychedelics or facilitate a session, these folks will help you process any journeys you might have on your own. Check out the MAPS directory to find someone in your area, or you can call the Fireside Project for phone support.

Your Legal Options for Therapeutic Psychedelic Experiences in Arizona

In Arizona, you have two options for a therapeutic psychedelic experience: ketamine clinics and guided psychedelic journeys. It’s important to note that if you do decide to pursue a guided psychedelic journey, you are responsible for sourcing your own medicine. If you have questions or concerns about this process, check out our Resources page for more information.

1. Ketamine Clinics

Ketamine is not a psychedelic substance— it’s a dissociative anesthetic. However, it can produce rapid relief from conditions like depression and anxiety, and its dissociating effects can restructure negative thought patterns and beliefs in a similar way to that of psychedelics.

In a ketamine clinic, the medicine is most frequently administered through an IV, but some clinics will use oral lozenges. The most important thing to consider is support. Not all clinics provide therapy as part of their programs, so it’s vital that you seek out clinics that have a comprehensive support structure or ensure you have your own therapist. Check out our article on how to find a ketamine clinic near you.

2. Guided Psychedelic Journeys with Psychedelic Passage

No matter where you live in Arizona, if we can physically get to you, we will sit for you. At Psychedelic Passage, our standard programs are five weeks long. It’s important to us that you have support for every leg of the journey, so the typical structure of the program involves two preparation sessions, the medicine ceremony, and two integration sessions.

If you are nervous about a full dose session, we can get you started by microdosing. Again, you are responsible for sourcing your own medicine, but we will coach you through the process, from the right amount to take to the different methods of integrating what you learn.

All of our facilitators are trained with a wide variety of psychedelics, from LSD to DMT, but most of our clients choose to journey with psilocybin mushrooms. Although less frequent, if you would like to try a cannabis journey, we hold space for that as well.
