Psilocybin & Psychedelic Assisted Therapy in Colorado

Have you heard about the benefits of psilocybin, but are unsure where to find psychedelic assisted therapy in Colorado? Perhaps you’re wondering if psilocybin can actually reduce your anxiety and help you deal with your depression. Or maybe you just want to know—are magic mushrooms legal in Colorado?

Before we cover the benefits of psychedelic assisted therapy, let’s look at the laws that govern the industry in your state. Even though psychedelics are decriminalized in Colorado, psychedelic assisted therapy (with a licensed therapist) is not yet available as licensed mental health professionals risk losing their licensure by working directly with psychedelic substances like psilocybin.

The key here is that the word therapy can have a lot of different implications. For example, are you looking for a therapeutic psychedelic experience or seeking a trip with the support of an actual licensed psychotherapist? While it may not seem like it, there’s a big difference between the two as one is available to you in Colorado and the other is not.

“Therapy” typically refers to work being done with a licensed therapist. However, “therapeutic” refers to having a beneficial effect on the body or mind per Merriam-Webster’s definition. So things like yoga, breathwork, meditation and even psychedelics can be considered therapeutic—with or without the presence of a therapist.

Additionally, the words psychotherapy, or psychotherapist can only be used by licensed therapists, whereas the words therapy and counseling do not have legal requirements in Colorado. Essentially, you want to be very clear on the level of support and type of experience that you’re seeking.

The good news is that although psychedelic-assisted therapy with a licensed mental health professional is not yet available in Colorado, there are ways to have a supported therapeutic psychedelic experience in your area

In this article, we’ll explore your different options for legal therapeutic psychedelic experiences, and how we can help in your healing journey. Keep in mind that our services are not provided by licensed mental health professionals as they are currently not allowed to provide direct, in-person support during a psychedelic experience.

The Current Legislation on Psychedelics in Colorado

First, a little bit of background on the legal landscape of psychedelics in Colorado. In 2019, Denver became the first city to decriminalize the use and possession of psilocybin, or magic mushrooms. That opened the floodgates to the psychedelic renaissance, reviving research that has lay dormant since the Regan era and destigmatizing the public reputation of psilocybin.

In short, the decriminalization of psychedelics in Denver has allowed us to facilitate guided journeys for people like you while drastically reducing the risk of criminal repercussions. But it’s important to understand that similar to cannabis, psychedelics are still considered to be illegal substances in the eyes of the federal government.

It’s inevitable that this new industry will face some headwinds, but we believe decriminalization will continue to spread in the wake of wisdom. In fact, activists are currently pursuing a state-wide psilocybin initiative that could appear on the 2022 Colorado ballot. Be sure to check out our state pages to stay up-to-date on the constantly changing legal status on psychedelic substances.

Your Legal Options for Therapeutic Psychedelic Experiences in Colorado

Luckily, you do have a few different types of psychedelic substances and experiences to choose from in the state of Colorado. Each offers pros and cons, so take a look at our list below to see which treatment option is best for you.

1. Ketamine Clinics

Although it’s not considered a traditional psychedelic, Ketamine has proven to be a useful tool for improving mental and emotional health. Research has shown that it’s an effective way to treat depression, but these clinics rarely have a comprehensive approach which leaves you at risk to have a negative or poorly integrated psychedelic experience.

2. Cannabis Assisted Therapy

Depending on your specific situation, this type of treatment may or may not satisfy your needs for a therapeutic psychedelic experience. Typically, as people explore the world of psilocybin, they will read Michael Pollan’s book or watch fantastic fungi, and decide that they want to sit with a traditional entheogen, which cannabis is not.

3. Guided Psychedelic Experiences

Commonly referred to as trip sitting, a guided psychedelic experience is one where a facilitator helps you at every stage of your psilocybin journey, from pre-trip preparation to post-trip integration. We offer this type of holistic healing experience at Psychedelic Passage as we believe it results in real change, and we’re able to do this legally because we don’t provide psychedelic medicines. Although we are not licensed mental health professionals, we do facilitate transformational experiences that many clients consider to be therapeutic. We conduct all of our services with an emphasis on harm reduction. The majority of our clients choose to work with psilocybin; however we can sit with other psychedelic medicines as well.

What are the Benefits of Having a Therapeutic Psychedelic Experience?

We’re still learning about the myriad benefits that psychoactive plants and chemicals like psilocybin can offer, but research has already shown that they have enormous healing potential. Arguably, this is something that indigenous people have known for centuries, but their ancient wisdom is now backed by modern science.

When used purposefully and under the proper supervision, psychedelics help you to access your subconscious mind, allowing for a deeper type of healing to take place. It helps you to become aware of limiting beliefs or mental models which no longer serve you, and release them to move forward in your life.

While many see this type of treatment as strictly a form of spiritual healing, there are serious physical and mental benefits to a therapeutic psychedelic experience as well. Known to help with treating anxiety, reducing stress, and dealing with depression, it’s a great alternative to the more traditional treatment methods.
