Welcome! If you’ve made it to this page, you’re well along the journey of psychedelic healing. The first and most important step is educating yourself, and we commend your commitment to this path.
If you’re seeking the kind of psychedelic-assisted therapy that’s been in the news, then you’ll have to wait a few years. For now, this kind of therapy is only available to those participating in government-sanctioned studies.
The key lies in the word therapy. Therapy implies a mental health professional that practices emotional healing work with a license provided by their state government. In order to keep their license, therapists must abide by the rules of the government. So long as psychedelics remain illegal at the state level (with the exception of Oregon in February), therapists cannot legally work with psychedelic medicines.
However, the word therapeutic simply means “to have a beneficial effect on the body or mind.” A practitioner who is not a therapist but trained in psychedelics can offer a therapeutic psychedelic experience without facing the same legal repercussions.
What qualifies a practitioner if not a license? A lot of things, but at Psychedelic Passage, we value integrity above all else. All of our facilitators have safety as their number one priority, and they engage in continual spiritual development with mentors. If they feel that they are not a good fit for you, they will let you know and happily suggest other practitioners that are more aligned.
In this article, we’ll be going over the legal landscape of psychedelics in Maine and how you can have a safe, supported psychedelic experience in your area.
Benefits of Having a Therapeutic Psychedelic Experience
A therapeutic psychedelic experience can be one of the most life-changing events for a person. These medicines have the capacity to heal treatment-resistant conditions in one or two sessions. Psilocybin, the primary chemical in “magic” mushrooms, is all over the news for its ability to rival antidepressant pharmaceuticals or break addiction. And MDMA is near the end of a long journey to legalization as a potent treatment for PTSD, hopefully by 2023.
However, psychedelics are medicines in a larger context than clinical disorders. Humans are collectively afflicted with a crisis of connection, and psychedelics are powerful tools that help heal the negative stories, beliefs, and traumas that separate each of us from what we truly are: a vast, interconnected web of energy and intelligence. Whether you call it God, the Universe, or Spirit, people who have a relationship to this divine, interconnected oneness are more likely to be happier and fulfilled then those who do not.
Finally, psychedelics are also being used as powerful optimization tools for human performance. Whether you desire greater focus at work or an enhanced sense of creativity for a new business idea, professionals across every discipline are microdosing psychedelics to have a greater impact on the world.
The Current Legislation on Psychedelics in Maine
Although Maine is on the complete opposite side of the country from places like Santa Cruz and Seattle, where psychedelics have been decriminalized, the winds of change are definitely blowing through the Pine Tree State.
On March 9, 2021, Representative Anne Perry kicked things off with a bill to decriminalize possession of all drugs for personal use. Unfortunately, the bill died later that July.
However, there is another bill moving through the legal process. Known as the Maine Psilocybin Services Act, LD 1582 is an ambitious proposition. The bill would follow Oregon’s lead and create a system where people twenty-one years and older can buy psilocybin and use it in the company of a psilocybin practitioner.
What differentiates this bill from Measure 109 in Oregon is that no diagnosis of a mental health condition is required to use psilocybin for healing. This is an exciting proposition because it creates the opportunity for psychologically healthy people to experience the transformation psilocybin can provide.
Your Legal Options for Therapeutic Psychedelic Experiences in Maine
In Maine, you have two options for a therapeutic psychedelic experience: ketamine clinics and guided psychedelic journeys.
It’s important to note that if you do decide to pursue a guided psychedelic journey, you are responsible for sourcing your own medicine. If you have questions or concerns about this process, check out our Resources page for more information.
1. Ketamine Clinics
Although it works on completely different brain receptors, ketamine is considered a psychedelic substance because of its similar hallucinogenic properties and its ability to reconfigure negative beliefs and stories. Most notably, it’s a rapid-acting antidepressant.
One advantage that ketamine has over the classical psychedelics like LSD and psilocybin mushrooms is that it’s federally legal to use for medicinal purposes.
Most clinics will provide the medicine through an IV, but some offer oral lozenges. The trickiest part about finding a proper ketamine clinic is finding one with adequate support. Psychedelics can stir up very heavy emotions, and you want to make sure that you have people that will support you before, during, and after the session.
If the nearest clinic to you doesn’t have a mental health professional who works with you to prepare and integrate your ketamine experience, consider finding a psychedelic integration specialist through MAPS or consulting with your own therapist.
2. Guided Psychedelic Journeys with Psychedelic Passage
No matter where you live in Maine, if we can physically get to you, we will sit for you. We believe that the most powerful healing happens in a supportive container, and this is why our programs are typically five weeks long.
We offer two preparation sessions before the psychedelic ceremony and two integration sessions following. If you’re not ready for a full dose, we can coach you through a microdosing protocol. No matter what, we’re here for you throughout the entire experience.
Most clients choose to work with psilocybin mushrooms because they’re the most accessible psychedelic substance and the hardest to fake. However, all of our facilitators are trained with a wide variety of medicines, including MDMA, LSD, and mescaline. If you would like to do a cannabis journey, we sit for that as well.
