Is it Safe to Take Psychedelics While in Hormone Therapy (HRT)?

The recent attention being given to psychedelics as potential tools for improving mental health have sparked curiosity around these substances for such a wide variety of issues.

From general anxiety to obsessive compulsive disorder to postpartum depression, fresh research is being cranked out by the minute, and results are suggesting that the benefits extend far beyond what was previously expected.

Among the areas that have sparked curiosity is the intersection between psychedelics and hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

Many individuals who are either contemplating or already undergoing HRT find themselves wondering if psychedelics can be safely explored for their therapeutic benefits while undergoing such a treatment.

This article delves into this important topic, examining the potential risks, considerations, and possible benefits of combining psychedelics with hormone replacement therapy.

By shedding light on this intriguing intersection, our goal is to contribute to the growing knowledge surrounding responsible and informed psychedelic use as well as empower individuals to make well-informed decisions regarding their mental and physical well-being.

Understanding the Role of Hormones

Hormones are chemical messengers produced by various glands in the body, such as the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal glands, and reproductive organs.

These molecules are released into the bloodstream and travel to target tissues or organs, where they exert their effects.

The role of hormones in the body is crucial and multifaceted. They regulate and control a wide range of physiological processes, including growth and development, metabolism, reproduction, mood, and emotions

Hormones act as signals that coordinate and communicate between different cells and organs, ensuring the proper functioning of various bodily systems.

Each hormone has specific target cells or organs that possess receptors designed to recognize and bind to them.

Once a hormone binds to its receptor, it triggers a cascade of cellular responses, influencing gene expression, protein synthesis, and cellular activities.

This intricate network of hormonal signaling maintains homeostasis, balance, and coordination within the body.

The endocrine system, comprising various glands that produce and release hormones, works in tandem with the nervous system to regulate and coordinate bodily functions.

Hormones play a crucial role in processes like regulating body temperature, controlling appetite and metabolism, regulating sleep patterns, maintaining reproductive function, and managing stress responses.

Imbalances or disruptions in hormone levels can lead to various health issues and conditions.

For instance, conditions like hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism result from the underproduction or overproduction of thyroid hormones, respectively.

What Is Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)?

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a medical intervention and treatment that involves the administration of hormones to supplement or replace the natural hormones in the body which may be deficient.

It is commonly used to manage hormonal imbalances or to support individuals undergoing gender transition. The goal of hormone replacement therapy is to bring hormone levels into a range that aligns with the desired physiological and psychological changes.

For transgender individuals, hormone replacement therapy often includes the administration of estrogen or testosterone, depending on their affirmed gender identity.

Estrogen therapy is typically used for individuals transitioning from male to female, while testosterone therapy is used for those transitioning from female to male.

These hormones help induce physical changes such as breast development, changes in body fat distribution, and alterations in facial and body hair growth patterns.

In addition to supporting gender transition, hormone replacement therapy is also used to address hormonal imbalances in both men and women.

Men may undergo testosterone replacement therapy to address conditions such as hypogonadism, where the body is unable to produce adequate levels of testosterone.

Women, especially those going through menopause, may receive estrogen or progesterone therapy to alleviate symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness.

HRT can be administered through various methods, including pills, patches, injections, gels, or implants. The specific method and dosage depend on individual needs, medical considerations, and the desired therapeutic outcomes.

The treatment is typically personalized and monitored by healthcare professionals to ensure its effectiveness and safety.

It is important to note that hormone replacement therapy is not without potential risks or side effects. These can vary depending on factors such as the type of hormone used, the dosage, and an individual’s overall health.

Some common side effects may include mood changes, changes in libido, acne, weight fluctuations, and potential cardiovascular or metabolic effects.

Overall, hormone replacement therapy plays a crucial role in managing hormonal imbalances and supporting individuals undergoing gender transition.

Current Research on The Safety of Hormones & Psychedelics

When it comes to the complex interplay of hormones and tryptamine psychedelics, it’s important to first understand how psychedelics affect the brain, which we covered in a past article.

Before we jump into the research, we’d like to point out that, similar to what was observed in cannabis, an “entourage effect” likely applies here as well, with psychedelics having a cumulative, synergistic effect on the human body.

In other words, depending on which psychedelic is being used, the unique combination of an individual’s hormonal makeup most likely affects how any given mind-altering substance manifests experientially.

Currently, limited scientific research directly addresses the safety and potential risks of combining psychedelic therapy with HRT, so it is crucial to confer with a doctor or health professional before experimenting with potentially contraindicated substances.

Firstly, serotonin, the well-known neurotransmitter related to the psychedelic experience, was even shown to act as a hormone in addition to its role as a neurotransmitter (Rybaczyk et al., 2005) in certain species.

Most importantly, it’s not fully understood just how important serotonin is in a wide variety of functions, but we know that it does play a role in cognition, mood, and behavior.

Along with the effects of HRT on serotonin levels are estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.

According to a study from 1995, “estrogen could alter mood and mental state by increasing the density of 5-HT2A receptors in cerebral cortex and nucleus accumbens” (Sumner & Fink).

In another study from 2021 by Raval and colleagues, it was found that a single dose of psilocybin actually decreased 5HT2A receptor density, but increased synaptic density.

This strange effect on receptor density is likely related to the antidepressant abilities of entheogens like psilocybin mushrooms, however, it is not clear how an increase or decrease in receptor density would affect the safety of the experience.

At the very least, it may have implications on the experienced potency of any given tryptamine psychedelic.

In a 2000 study, the time it took for serotonin to bind to its receptors increased with the administration of estrogen and progesterone. This could suggest that HRT could lead to a delay in felt effects of serotonin agonists like psilocybin (Moses et al.).

The topic of hormones is truly complex and has greater implications on personality & spiritual transformation in relation to altering or treating personality and mood issues with hormones or psychedelics.

While research on psychedelics is growing in numbers and all suggests efficacy for such issues, it has yet to extend to the topic of safety in those undergoing HRT.

Questions and considerations to be addressed in future research:

    • How does HRT affect the psychedelic experience directly? Do certain forms of HRT lead to greater sensitization to the effects of psychedelics
    • Are there contraindications between psychedelics like LSD, magic mushrooms (psilocybin), MDMA, DMT, etc. and hormonal treatments
    • Does increased synaptic density or decreased receptor density have any significant impacts on the efficacy of psychedelic therapy or the safety of it?

Overall, direct and relevant research has yet to be conducted on this topic, but we will continue updating you, the reader, as new developments are made evident.
