Within the Psilocybe genus, comprising over 200 mushroom species, substantial variations exist in potency, visual characteristics, and cultivation requirements. Psilocybe Cubensis, extensively researched and widely cultivated, stands out as the most prevalent species. 

This popularity has led to the identification of numerous “subspecies” within the Cubensis species, commonly colloquialized as “strains” in the mushroom community. However, from a microbiological and taxonomical perspective, this terminology lacks precision.

Despite belonging to the same Psilocybe Cubensis species, these strains exhibit significant differences in physical traits, growing characteristics, and the concentration of psychotropic compounds. 

The inclination to label different varieties of Psilocybe Cubensis as “strains” can be traced back to the established influence of the cannabis industry on the emerging mushroom domain. 

As the stigma surrounding cannabis dissipated over the last two decades, the industry witnessed a surge in strain categorization, from “Purple Kush” to “Sour Diesel” to “LA Confidential.” 

Given the common ground between Psilocybe mushroom farmers and the cannabis industry, many transitioning from the latter, the use of “strain” in the mushroom world can be seen as an assimilation of terminology.

While genetic sequencing allows the mapping of different cannabis strains, tracing their lineage back to the original “parents,” the same cannot be applied to most Psilocybe Cubensis mushrooms due to their unique reproductive process. 

In nature, fungi reproduce by releasing spores into the environment. When spores meet and germinate, a unique mushroom variety is born. This variety possesses genetics similar to its parents but not identical. This process bears a resemblance to human reproduction, where the offspring often shares physical traits with the parents but is genetically unique.

Therefore, each cultivation from a spore print or syringe actually creates a brand new “strain” from a taxonomy perspective, meaning no two batches of the same “strain” can ever be the same (except through an isolation process). 

For instance, two mycologists growing “Golden Teacher” Psilocybe Cubensis from a spore syringe would end up with distinct strains that exhibit a diverse genetic profile upon genetic sequencing. 

The variety is still “Golden Teacher”, but we cannot say the same for strain. Why? Because in order to qualify as a “strain,” the genetic profile should remain consistent from generation to generation. 

In essence, “variety” is a more accurate and nuanced term to describe “similar, but not identical”, while “strain” implies a level of consistency that is not possible through most mushroom cultivation methods.

Up until this point, we’ve been using the term “strain” quite liberally, recognizing that many individuals commonly use this term when searching for information via search engines.

Moving forward in this article, we’ve made a strategic decision to incorporate the term “strain” in our headers. This decision is purely to ensure that we capture our target audience effectively.

Rest assured, throughout the content, excluding headers, we remain committed to accurate terminology, using “variety” to describe the diverse genetic expressions within the Psilocybe Cubensis mushroom species.

Before we begin, we must add a very important note. Mushroom variety selection is one of the least critical factors of a therapeutic psychedelic experience, especially for high-dose experiences, where the sheer volume of the substance overshadows subtle variations. 

However, careful consideration is an essential consideration when it comes to microdosing, where subtle shifts in mindset are truly the name of the game. The subtlety of the microdosing experience is highly dependent on your chosen dosage, which should factor in variety potency. 

For instance, 0.1g of Golden Teachers will yield markedly different effects than an equivalent dose of a Penis Envy variety because Golden Teachers is a less potent variety. This underscores the need for a nuanced understanding of the chosen variety’s characteristics. 

Myth Busting – Is the Potency of Penis Envy Mushrooms Truly 4x Higher Than Other Strains?

Assessing the potency of psychedelic mushrooms, including Penis Envy, raises a fundamental question: What does potency data truly signify in the realm of psychedelic mushrooms?

As we explore further in the upcoming sections, scientific advancements enable the accurate identification and measurement of various active compounds (such as psilocybin, psilocin, baeocystin, etc.) in mushroom samples. However, it’s important to note that this data alone does not provide a comprehensive perspective.

The interactions among these compounds, akin to cannabis’ entourage effect, remain enigmatic. Moreover, as you’ll note, anecdotal reports from consumers add complexity to potency metrics.

We’ll observe instances where mushrooms with seemingly modest quantities of psilocybin and psilocin triggered remarkably intense trips according to user accounts. Conversely, we will also explore scenarios where the opposite reigns true. 

The moral of this narrative is that large numerical values don’t necessarily guarantee a prolonged, intense, or enjoyable journey– a concept we covered in our podcast episode, “Does The Heroic Dose Downplay The Hero’s Journey?”. 

The available data suggests that more frequently than not, Penis Envy exhibits elevation tryptamine levels compared to other cubensis mushroom varieties, but this occurrence is unpredictable. 

Ranking in at #6, the following data for the Penis Envy variety reveals that, while it maintains notably higher average content than most varieties, it doesn’t consistently reach a potency level even twice as high as the average.

Thus, making a broad statement that penis envy mushrooms are 2-4 times more potent than average mushrooms lacks sufficient nuance, as this assertion doesn’t consistently hold true. 

Current Data Limitations

We advise readers to approach the following data with caution. Just as there can be significant variations between two harvests of the same mushroom variety, there can also be notable differences in tryptamine content among individual mushrooms within a single harvest. Additionally, there is considerable variation in active components within a single mushroom, such as the stem and cap. 

From our observations of these hyphae cup competitions, it appears that they only measure a small quantity of mushrooms, typically a few grams. Unfortunately, this isn’t a reliable way to obtain a consistent average of active components in a certain mushroom variety.

We say this not with the intention to criticize; rather, to highlight current limitations in the name of transparency. Nonetheless, it is worth noting that the results of the following data set do tend to align with the majority of anecdotal reports we’ve found on variety potency.

Still, the most reliable way to make personalized decisions about potency is by testing your own batch of mushrooms at home, a process we will guide you through later in this article. 

Psilocybin Mushroom Strains Ranked by Potency

The assessment of “potency” is established by considering the average tryptamine levels in the mushroom variety.  The main fungal tryptamines are psilocybin (PSB) and psilocin (PS), while the minor tryptamines are baeocystin (BA), norbaeocystin (NB), and aeruginascin.

Of the samples that fell within the “average” range of our 30 listed psilocybin varieties, we found an:

The caps start as reddish-brown and mature into a golden-brown hue while flattening out and becoming convex during sporulation. The stems have a yellowish-white appearance and bruise to a blue-green color when damaged. 

The rapid growth of this large mushroom is attributed to its hollow stems. However, this characteristic also contributes to the substantial size reduction when the mushrooms are dried.

However, Morris, in a podcast on his Patreon in June 2021, revealed that he had been misled by mycologist John Allen (Mushroom John, of Psilocybe allenii fame) and various fungal forum hearsay.

The 2009 story involves Terrence McKenna discovering a vast wild patch of Psilocybe cubensis in the Columbian Amazon in the early 1970s. McKenna brought spore prints back to Colorado, and one reached Steven Pollock, a medical doctor turned mushroom enthusiast. 

Pollock worked on isolating the mushrooms to create the Penis Envy variety before his mysterious murder in 1981. Intriguingly, fanciful versions claim Pollock was found dead with a Penis Envy mushroom.

In 2021, Morris revised this narrative in an interview with Rich Gee, a reclusive mycologist, whose real name is Richard Guitierrez. Gee, in contrast to the legendary tale, presents a more grounded account. 

He obtained spores from McKenna’s Amazonian collection through his friend Jules Stevens. With laboratory expertise, Gee purified the spores, leading to the emergence of three varieties, one of which displayed a mutation that eventually became Penis Envy.

Gee’s story discounts the narrative of Pollock’s involvement, refuting claims of receiving a mysterious postal “penis” print from him. The name “Penis Envy” itself originated from Gee showing his mushrooms to strippers in 1977, who humorously coined the name.

While verifying the exact truth remains challenging, Gee, with his direct connection to Penis Envy, presents a compelling account supported by photographs and botanical expertise. 

Despite his significant role, Gee emphasizes that he doesn’t seek credit and reached out to Morris to rectify the story’s absurdity, considering it a matter of comedy rather than pride in his achievement.

Tidal Wave mushrooms commonly feature elongated stems, measuring approximately 150-200mm, showcasing a spectrum from beige to yellow. The stems exhibit a propensity to bruise in shades of blue or greenish-blue and may present variations such as a larger base or contorted appearance.

During the initial stages, the caps exhibit a bulbous shape, transitioning into a wider form as they mature, displaying hues of brown or golden.
